Grafting Cities: Cultivating our common future

CAIC23 | Climate Alliance International Conference

18.10.2023 – 20.10.2023, Modena, Italy

Grafting cities (verb) /ˈɡrɑːft·tɪŋ ˈsɪ·tis/
writing a new story for the city’s future; reinventing each city based what already exists; revealing how a place can flourish by building on its assets and adjusting them; transforming our cities street by street, house by house and place by place to boost diversity and resiliency

In cities and towns across Europe, an ambitious and just transformation is already taking root. Whether through nature-based solutions, local CO2 pricing to guide climate-friendly procurement, renovation campaigns to combat energy poverty, the improvement of sustainable mobility infrastructure with the help of the citizens or the fostering of energy communities – examples of equitable climate action on the local level abound.

With Grafting Cities, we look at concrete examples of the transformation we need, delving into the question of how to act on our climate goals in spite of an ever changing local landscape. Municipal representatives from across Europe will get the chance to exchange via high-level plenaries, interactive workshops, informal open space formats and enjoyable networking opportunities. The event, organised by Climate Alliance, Energy Cities, the City of Modena and AESS, will provide a unique framework for this year’s Climate Alliance International Conference, CAIC23.

A special spotlight will be placed on outPHit examples and outcomes in two sessions throughout the week:

  • During the Shaping our built environment workshop on Thursday, 19 October, outPHit will be front and centre, pointing to the importance of quality in attaining optimal energy performance
  • During Friday's Learn and Share session, the project will again be represented with a stand making for one-on-one conversations on reotriftting tools and methods with muncipal represenatives informing muncipal representatives
